What the Hell is Prospector Sam Anyway?

Time to go off the beatin’ path for a minute. If you’re looking for bets or gambling focused content, I’ll save you the time and tell you to click away now, but if you want to know a little more about my approach to this character and gambling then here you go. I’m not really sure that anybody does, but I like writing and I run this ship (sort of, I’m sure Dimers would stop me from doing anything too stupid) so I’ll put out the content I want.
While the some sports are winding down, baseball is heating up! BetMGM Sportsbook has an unbelievable 20-1 odds boost on any MLB game, which pays $200 in free bets on any $10 bet, win or lose, just for placing one moneyline bet on ANY MLB game today.

Why now? Well, I’ve been writing about sports gambling for around 2 years, and have been doing it for Dimers as Prospector Sam for over a year and a half, and I think the whole concept requires some explanation. And, as my following grows, I get more people who are (rightfully) confused about the grown man pretending to be a cartoon who gives out sports picks. I like to be open and honest about everything (except, you know, who I actually am) as a way to build trust, and I suppose this is an attempt to do that.
The whole concept of creating an anonymous character started as a way to keep my name off the internet. Basically, I didn't want a potential job running a google search and finding out that I spend my time writing crass sports gambling articles. I also liked anonymity because it gave me more freedom to make jokes and write with fewer boundaries, which I probably wouldn't do as much if I was putting my own name behind my work. This character is about 75% me, 25% hyperbole.
But, since I joined Dimers back in November 2020, lots of things about this character have changed. I had no idea where I wanted to take this project and didn’t even have a Twitter account at the time, but I enjoyed writing and I was ecstatic to have my work on a real website. But, just like everything in this world, I’ve had to adjust along the way and turned Prospector Sam into a different persona than it was on day 1.
Not only was I completely uninterested in social media at the time (thankfully, Dimers pushed me into getting a Twitter account), but I didn’t really view myself as a gambling expert or handicapper. The content focused on gambling and I am profitable on that side of things, but the real value in my mind was the humor and interesting writing which was meant to be different from the normal (I’ll say boring, but some might disagree) content you see.

Jump ahead to July 2022, and Prospector Sam is now a gambling focused character who gives out daily picks and has built a fairly decent following of people who tail or engage with those wagers. I don’t mind that shift either, since I think of myself as a fairly good gambler and I love being able to kill a work day by sweating out picks with the Gold Diggers, but it’s also forced some of the more creative stuff I used to write to take a back seat.
That said, I’ve held on to the same tone as I had on day 1 and that won’t change. Smart, informed picks are mixed in with humor and random tweets about nonsense because that’s what I enjoy and I think is fun for other people. It certainly makes for some issues, notably that balancing serious gambling with pretending to be a cartoon and making stupid jokes is a tough line to walk, but working that way also brings something different to the table from most of the other prominent names who provide a more serious approach.
So what am I? Well, still just a regular guy who likes betting on sports and writing. But, while I never intended to build a following based around helping people make money, I spend a lot more time focusing on serious gambling (both with my picks and in my articles) than I do on the other nonsense. Once I realized people didn't give a damn to read without some actual value thrown in, I made sure to put more emphasis on making money. It was supply and demand at its simplest form, really.
But, while I pride myself on giving out smart bets and pushing intelligent gambling strategies, I have no interest in giving up on the humor or trying to monetize anything. I write for Dimers and tweet because I genuinely enjoy it, and I haven’t made a cent doing that. Dimers is, and will always be, my home (so long as they don't kick me to the curb), because loyalty is a big deal to me and they gave me a shot when I probably didn't deserve it. And, while I might be able to make some cash if I went to a paid Discord or some other spot, that’s not what I’m looking for. I’m here for the community and connecting with other sports gamblers because I love this stuff, and I don’t want to limit those opportunities even as Prospector Sam gets bigger. Ironically, in a space where people are trying to profit off betting, being here isn’t about the money for me.

That leaves us in a nice place to wrap up this article with a short summary of what I hope Prospector Sam gives to everyone who reads or engages. Simply, I’m here to help you. If you’re just looking for picks, feel free to drown out the rest of my noise, and if you’re looking for articles or tweets to make you laugh or help survive the day, I’ve got that too. I take a quality over quantity approach with everything I put out, but that doesn't mean they’re all winners (especially on the gambling side, please for the love of god remember that).
Most importantly, I want this character to be a “happy place” of sorts. I don’t take myself too seriously and try to keep things light even when I’m losing (short term misses hurt, but long term is the goal) because I think sports and gambling are fun. I also don’t get into real world issues like politics to keep this as an oasis from the day to day shit we have to deal with, and I spin things with (attempted) humor because boring projections should be left to the stock brokers.
To the large number of people following along with the articles or joining in on midday Danish soccer betting, I appreciate the time and support. I never expected to be here and I never take it for granted. And, if you’ve ever got any questions about analysis or want to give some thoughts on what I can do better, the DMs are always open. Hopefully this project and Dimers continues to grow, and we can keep our shenanigans up for a long time.
