Top 5 Teams To Watch In March Madness 2022

Gonzaga +380

Gonzaga are, undoubtedly, one of the best teams in the country. They came one win short of grabbing their first title last season and what Mark Few has done to build a national powerhouse at a small Catholic school in Spokane, Washington is nothing short of a miracle (maybe there is a god?). This team scores like crazy, but may be a bit more liable for an upset this year since they have less raw talent than years past. If they’re going to make a run, Drew Timme is going to need to have another big month.

Duke +1200

Setting aside my disdain for Duke and the Coach K farewell tour, this is the last we’ll see of the HoF coach on the bench which is a big story in itself. The Blue Devils also have at least 2 lottery picks and enough talent to make a deep run, but the final dance for Coach K will keep eyeballs on every game they play (including the first round, Duke has lost as a 2 seed before). Just about everyone will be watching them closely and you should be too, even if many of us will be rooting for them to lose.

Murray State +50000

Gonzaga’s perennial power has made them less of a darling in recent years, so we need to look elsewhere for a program the country can get behind for a deep run. Look no further than Murray State, a tiny school out of the Ohio Valley that’s been boosted by the rise of Ja Morant, who led the Racers in his time at the program and is now taking the NBA by storm. This team has lost just 2 games all year but it’s hard to say how they’ll handle more athletic competition since their only power 5 test this season was a 13 point loss to Auburn. If the Racers get a couple of good matchups and get hot from deep, though, they could cause issues for almost anyone in the country.

South Dakota State +50000

If you like points, then I suggest you tune in to watch the Jackrabbits. This team is second in the country for PPG (behind only Gonzaga) and watching them go toe to toe with a real team (aka someone not in the Summit League) is going to be an absolute blast. Hopefully they stick around for more than 1 game.

Jacksonville State +50000

Did they get an “at large” bid? No. Did they win their conference tournament? Also no. A truly unique set of events, aka the NCAA having terrible rules, meant that Jacksonville State got the automatic A-Sun bid despite Bellarmine winning their tournament. This team really isn’t relevant as far as winning anything, but the story is interesting and a good way to remind everyone how genuinely bad the NCAA is at doing their very simple job.
