PICK: Buffalo Sabres moneyline (+140)
There are 2 games on tonight's NHL slate as the first half concludes. The Boston Bruins visit the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Carolina Hurricanes visit the Buffalo Sabres. Let's take a look at the latter.
The Buffalo Sabres have had a fantastic first half to the season, especially offensively. Buffalo has a record of 26-19-4 for 56 points, they lead the NHL in goals per game at 3.8 and they have the 4th best Power Play, at 26%.
Defensively, they still have to correct things but they have become one of the most explosive teams in the league. They are led by Tage Thompson, who is becoming a superstar before our eyes.
Tage leads the team with 34 goals and 68 points. Jeff Skinner has had a resurgence under coach Don Granato and Rasmus Dahlin is having a Norris caliber season.
Buffalo has gotten off to strong starts in previous years, but they have absolutely dissipated in November/December. That has not happened this season.
They face a Carolina team that is coming off an emotional win against the Kings last night. Carolina erased a 4-1 3rd period deficit, en route to a 5-4 overtime win.
The Canes will be playing their 6th game in 14 days and having a 6 point lead in the Metropolitan division, we may not see their finest effort tonight.
Buffalo has not played in 3 days and they can end the first half of the season in a playoff spot with a win, as they trail the Penguins by 1 point for WC2 in the East, which I think is a very important feat for this team.
