Best Bets for the Early Games on Sunday, September 11, 2022

Jacksonville Jaguars vs. Washington Commanders - 1:00PM ET

The Jaguars offense should be a heck of a lot better this season than it was last year, with Doug Pederson being a good offensive head coach. He has a history of doing solid work with quarterbacks, so former No. 1 overall pick Trevor Lawrence should have a much better sophomore season than he did with Urban Meyer — who was more often found in questionable situations at bars than he was soaking in post-game Gatorade baths.  

Look for Jacksonville's offense to get off to a hot start against a Washington defense that has question marks in the secondary. The Jaguars will surely look to dial up some designer deep shots to exploit that group, and Lawrence's ability to use his legs will allow him to get away from the Commanders defensive line — that's the strength of the Washington defense. 

The Commanders offense should also be able to put up a decent amount of points in this one, even with Brian Robinson not out there to take advantage of the starting job he had seemingly won during training camp. That could, however, have a positive impact on the Over in this game. Instead of pounding away between the tackles, Washington will instead have two pass-catching backs, Antonio Gibson and J.D. McKissic, on the field quite often. That gives this game a better chance of opening up. 

All in all, it's just hard to see these defenses playing well enough for the Under to hit. Even if these aren't explosive offenses, both groups are going to be capable of scoring.

Philadelphia Eagles vs. Detroit Lions - 1:00PM ET

The Eagles are one of the most popular futures bets in the league this year, but they could have some trouble winning on the road in Week 1. While the Lions were miserable a year ago, the team did make some improvements late in the season and the offense looks like it could be a really impressive unit with Anthony Lynn no longer calling the shots. 

Detroit has surrounded Jared Goff with a good supporting cast, so this passing game has the potential to be dangerous this year. And the running game is surely going to be great, with D'Andre Swift being one of the most talented backs in the league. What this all means is that the Lions are going to have success on offense against the Eagles, which means they really should find a way to keep this game close. 

While Jalen Hurts is an exciting player to watch, Detroit defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn is going to make sure his defense tries to get some pressure on him and not allow him to set his feet. Hurts is not a very accurate passer, so the Lions would rather take risks in letting him beat them over the top. That's a much better alternative to letting him run all over them. 

This might be a tough pick to make because of the directions these teams appear to be heading this season, but we're buying what we saw out of Detroit late last year and we think the team can use its home-field advantage to keep this game close against Philadelphia.
