West Ham vs. Manchester City - Pick of the Day

Given that this is probably the best match-up of the weekend, I figured it would make sense to give you all a little skin in the game. You’re welcome for caring.

But, while I’m happy to give us an angle here, it’s probably not one you’d expect and it’s a bit of an odd tactical approach. You’ve been warned, I suppose.

When I looked at the line for this game, I knew there was going to be value on betting West Ham in some shape or form. City are certainly better, but West Ham are no slouches and +750 to win on the opening matchday at home is a bit drastic.

However, even with the potential value on the money line, I’m not ready to get that frisky. City are a far better side than anyone in the EPL not named Liverpool, and caution is a good approach early in the year.

So what’s our bet? West Ham TT Over 0.5 at -144.

City’s defense is one of the toughest in the world to crack, but West Ham are more than capable of breaking that shell and cooking a nice little omelet. Not only did the Hammers average over 1.5 goals last season, they tallied three in their two league matches against City.

So, for a low bar like scoring one goal in 90 minutes, getting -144 feels like a hell of a number and it’s got value despite not being an extremely high payout. Sure, there are reasons to be weary. Chances may be few and far between for the home side given that City will likely dominate possession, and the class on City’s back line makes finding goals difficult.

But West Ham play well on the break which is a skill you need to score against the Citizens, and the Hammers have the clinical finishers to take those chances. I’ll play this one with some caution and opt for a bankroll builder.
