EPL 2021/22 Matchday 37 Soccer Picks and Predictions

The sharpest soccer bettor on the net is back, with plays for the English Premier League action this weekend, with games for Week 37.

Well ladies and gentlemen, we’ve reached the point in the EPL season where Sam’s brain has officially snapped. Some weeks I don’t have a ton to say in my intros and they require a bit of internal digging to produce something worth reading (at least, I hope it’s worth reading). Not this week.

To start, let’s discuss the Top 4 race, which took a fairly expected but heartbreaking turn for yours truly. Going into Anfield and taking 3 points was always a tough ask and 1 isn’t anything to be disappointed about, but to grab the lead and then lose it via a perfectly deflected goal was painful to see. I also happened to be at a bar in Tuscaloosa yelling at the TV, and let’s just say there were a lot of very confused/concerned individuals. More painful was watching Arsenal come out and take the easiest 3 points you’ll ever see against Leeds, who managed to concede 2 goals in the first 10 minutes then round out the half with a red card. That pretty much seals Spurs fate in the Europa League next year, and some wonderful trips to Bulgaria and Azerbaijan await me on Thursdays.

As for the gambling, we once again did very well on the EPL and kept things profitable, including an easy first half winner on our biggest bet of the week (shout out Norwich for continuing to be awful). Good news, right? Well, mostly, except for the fact that we got ABSOLUTELY FUCKING ROBBED on the one bet we lost. It’s hard to get mad at Burnley for pushing to the final whistle, but down 3-0 after 90 I think we could all agree that the game was over. So, to watch the Clarets score a completely useless goal in stoppage time to kill our “Both Teams to Score - NO” bet was the stuff of nightmares for a gambler, and I’m now rooting wholeheartedly for them to get relegated. I’m vengeful, and I don’t forget…

On that note, let’s get back to it and make some more cash for groceries or the strip club or whatever weird hobbies you people are into.

Tottenham vs. Burnley: Sunday May 15, 7:00 AM EDT

At this point in my life, there’s probably nothing I understand better than the quirks of Tottenham. One of those was on display in their midweek victory in the North London Derby, where they dominated Arsenal (yay) but still sit a point behind them because of recently dropped points to Brighton and Brentford (sad). Another one of those anomalous tendencies is to come out and look completely awful right after a good performance, just to prove that they’re capable. So, the only question is, exactly how bad will they be. It may be misguided optimism or an understanding of how bad Burnley is, but I’m not ready to commit to Tottenham dropping points. The gap in talent is still huge and Spurs should (God I’m going to regret this) handle them. But, that said, we will also find a way to do something stupid or give up a needless goal, which is why we’re taking BTTS (given the intro, it’s also a bet we’re simply owed by the Gambling Gods). Spurs have enough talent to score a few here, and Burnley will do enough, especially with the relegation fight, to find one as well. Hopefully I wont regret waking up at 7 for this match.

PICK: Both Teams to Score - YES (-116, 1.5 units)

Leeds vs. Brighton Sunday May 15, 9:00AM EDT

Fortune favors the bold. Every once in a while you have to go out on a limb in this business, and I’ve decided this is the day to do it. And, while there’s absolutely nothing about Leeds’ recent form that suggests they should win this game, I think this is a good spot to attack their ML at +170. To start, Leeds have everything to play for sitting in 18th while Brighton got their signature win last weekend and probably could not give a fuck less about this match. On top of that, Leeds last 3 games were against teams in the Top 4 and their results prior to that run are much prettier (11 points in 5 matches). Leeds defense is absolutely horrendous and against more potent offenses they won’t have much of a prayer in terms of holding up, but Brighton barely average over a goal per game and this is a good spot for Leeds to gain some much needed ground for survival. As the saying goes “the hungry dog runs faster,” and I think Leeds run fast enough to get the steak or whatever it is those dogs are running after.

PICK: Leeds moneyline (+170, 1 unit)

West Ham vs. Man City: Sunday May 15, 9:00AM EDT

During the midweek, I made a very silly and critical mistake. I played it “safe” on City goals and went with a low total and added the corner total to avoid a result where City only put in 2. And BOY WAS THAT STUPID. City (or, more appropriately, De Bruyne) decimated Wolves and City never needed to push because they put the game away in under 30 minutes. So, rather than make things complicated, I’m going to do the most rational thing and bet City over 2.5 at +130. This team has nothing left to play for aside from the EPL title, and they’re clicking on all cylinders offensively at the moment. While West Ham aren’t a lame duck since their European spot isn’t locked, they don’t have the quality to hang with City and this game should be fairly lopsided. City have scored 3 or more in each of their last 5 EPL matches, and I don’t expect that run to stop here unless we get a Red card or the Hammers play out of their minds defensively. The price is solid, and I’ll take a big swing at this one.

BET: City Team Total Over 2.5 (+130, 2 units)
