College Basketball Best Bets for Wednesday, December 28

Kentucky Wildcats vs. Missouri Tigers - 7:00PM ET

Sometimes you just have to go with your gut - and my gut tells me Kentucky is in a different weight class than Missouri. But fortunately, there's some numbers that back that statement up. Much has been made about John Calipari's supposed struggles to put together a high quality offense with this year's Kentucky team, however they have the 25th ranked offense on Kenpom (to go along with the 13th best defense) and are the 8th best three-point shooting team in the country by percentage.

Missouri has one good win - a blow out of Illinois, who has been fighting each other for weeks. The only other top 50 team Missouri played this season was Kansas, who they lost to by 28 points at home. Missouri has the 148th ranked defense in the nation, and that's good news for Kentucky, as they haven't lost a game to a defense ranked outside the top 100 in the last two seasons.

Alabama Crimson Tide vs. Mississippi State Bulldogs - 9:00PM ET

Alabama has been one of the most impressive teams in the country this year, with impressive wins over Houston, Michigan State, North Carolina and Memphis already under their belt. They are 2-0 in true road games this season, so we don't expect them to be spooked by the atmosphere at Mississippi State. Star freshman Brandon Miller is unstoppable, and if the game is close late, we expect him to take over.

If you're going to beat Alabama, you need a great offense that can keep up with their run and gun style. In their two losses, Gonzaga and UConn (both top 10 offenses in the country), were able to do so. Mississippi State is just the 134th ranked offense in the nation. Their last two games have been very unimpressive, losing to Drake on a neutral court and beating Nicholls State by just two points at home the game before that.

St. John's Red Storm vs. Xavier Musketeers - 9:00PM ET

While we love our first two picks today, we also are weary of picking all road teams, so fortunately we have a play on a home team for the third leg. St. John's hosts Xavier tonight, and the Red Storm have been incredible at home so far, going 8-0 in home games with an average margin of victory of 18 points. Both teams play a very fast tempo, which bodes well for St. John's elite transition attack.

This is a good "spot" bet for St. John's as well. They will look to bounce back after a big loss on the road at Villanova. It's also a look ahead spot for Xavier as they host #2 ranked UConn on Saturday. Xavier is fortunate to be 10-3, and while they have won six straight games, half of those wins came down to the final minute against teams worse than St. John's.
